運氣好的話,bighorn sheep也是這公園可能看到的另一種野生動物。之所以強調運氣好,是因為比其他野生動物難看到。如果你志在這公園看到大角羊的話,可以試State Game Lodge往西到一個Grace Coolidge Campground的這一段US-16A大概五分鐘左右的路。

在我到這段路後,我其實不太相信之前在Visitor Center打聽到的這地點。這地方的地形有點類似Yellowstone的Gardiner Canyon,除了有山壁斜坡可以當bighorn sheep的所謂escape route,也有草可以吃。但這地方有個問題,就是樹太多且太密了點。一般來說,用視線偵測獵物的bighorn sheep不喜歡到這種地方,除非不得已或是有什麼特殊的利多因素。

因為就住在State Game Lodge,開車到這反正也沒花什麼時間,甚至是可以用走的,三不五時就到這檢查一下,終於在最後一次要離開這公園時看到一群母的bighorn sheep。對於有較多野生動物觀賞經驗的人,可以先試著把這些相片的bighorn sheep拿掉,然後想像一下在這種地方會看到什麼動物?在這種以高大樹林為背景出現的大都是bear或deer這類的。

這些羊沒做什麼特別的事,就吃草吃完過馬路往山坡上爬。但有趣的是這些羊所在的背景,所以這邊的相片都著重這一點。

某次在看pronghorn時,忽然腳邊草叢有動靜,檢查了一下發現原來是隻cottontail rabbit,也就是隻兔子。這兔子在這區域不算難見到,除了在Black Hills外,我也在Badlands National Park看過幾次。有時候,這兔子也出現在prairie dog town。

Cottontail rabbit跟jackrabbit算是兩種最容易看到的兔子,外型上cottontail的耳朵沒有jackrabbit那麼大,且cottontail rabbit比較小隻,是視覺上的主要差別。

這公園另一個很容易看到的動物是black-tailed prairie dog,實際上應該可以說是保證看得到。如果你是從Wind Cave National Park進入這公園的話,你應該已經在那公園的馬路旁先看過了。即使沒有,進到Custer State Park後右轉Wildlife Loop Road開個五分還是十分鐘就可以在馬路旁看到草地上坑坑洞洞的所謂prairie dog town以及一堆住在那玩耍兼拼經濟的prairie dog。

Prairie dog這名字是當年Lewis and Clark的探險隊首先看到而命名,因為這動物看到威脅就會開始叫向附近的同伴們示警,所以被稱為dog。實際上他們類似一般的ground squirrel,不過群居在一起並在平原上挖洞。這挖洞的行為並不受農夫還是rancher這類的人歡迎,因此在公園外這動物被視為是pest並受到大量的撲殺,這動物不但因此數量銳減,以這動物為主要食物的black-footed ferret也因此連帶遭殃而幾乎絕種。

通常待在車上搖下車窗看會是比較好的方式,或說他們比較不會逃而待在離你比較近的位置。如果你想要跟他們更沒距離而下車觀賞的話,他們大都會不由自主的想逃甚至鑽進洞裡去。這動物雖然沒有marmot那麼肥,但其實長得也算逗趣,尤其是春天一堆新生baby在地上跑來跑去讓整個情景相當有生命力。待久一點可能還會看到一些「ㄙㄞ ㄋㄞ」的畫面,可說是欣賞野生動物最令人愉悅的時刻之一。

在Wildlife Loop Road上,pronghorn(叉角羚)是路上容易看到的另一種野生動物。這動物主要以視覺偵測predator,所以喜歡沒有遮蔽的開闊地形,是另一個容易被看到的原因。一般號稱pronghorn的視力可以比擬八倍望遠鏡,也就是400mm的焦距。以前到大西部的古人用望遠鏡掃描的時候,可以看到望遠鏡裡小小的pronghorn也在遠方看他,因此有這說法,而這對也以視力偵測predator的bighorn sheep也適用。

我在Wildlife Loop Road上看過很多次pronghorn,感覺這邊的pronghorn不太怕人,即使距離不遠他們依然自我感覺良好做自己的事而不受影響。本來我是想看有沒有機會在五月底看到新生的baby,看來至少早了一或二星期,也許是還沒生或是剛生但躲著,所以沒看到。

不過意外看到兩隻公的pronghorn在搞華山論劍,也就是秋天mating season的對決。這其實是一隻小隻的公pronghorn主動去挑戰另一隻大隻的公pronghorn,這只是練習賽,他當然沒贏,而且三不五時做出submissive的動作。Pronghorn的華山論劍動作我以前有看過,不過距離沒像這次這麼近,歷時也沒有這次這麼久。練習賽大概就點到為止,雖然不激烈,但依然相當有趣。

公園裡可能看到的另一種大型野生動物是elk,不算特別容易在Wildlife Loop Road上看到,我自己是在這條路到Wind Cave National Park間的地方看到的。Elk是典型喜歡在太陽高度較低時間活動的動物,大太陽下一般比較不容易看到。

因為這時候是五月底,差不多是elk calf出生的時候,想說不知道是否會看到新生兒,但是並沒有,也許在一或兩個星期後才比較有機會看到。
