9-11. Lodgepole Pine

在黃石公園那麼大的森林面積裡,lodgepole pine佔了約80%,可說是黃石公園的「園樹」。這樹雖然不是只有在黃石公園才有,比如北邊的Glacier National Park與南邊的Grand Teton National Park都可以看到這種樹。

這樹之所以叫做lodegepole的原因來自於印地安人的tepee,也就是他們睡覺的帳棚常常都是用這種樹撐起來。這種樹不但直且長,而且不重,因此適合竹水草而居時讓馬扛著走,是印地安人相當依賴的一種天然資源。

Figure 9-11.5: 這段又提到森林大火,可以將lodgepole pine間的空地清掃而騰出空間讓其他生物生存,包括年輕的lodgepole pine。

就植物來說,lodgepole pine是一種相當適應艱困環境生存的樹。由於黃石公園屬於火山地形,土地大都是由rhyoloite構成,其衍生的土壤並不肥沃,再加上黃石公園這邊冬天長、高積雪量以及高海拔帶來的寒冷,大部分樹木無法在這種艱難環境下生存,也因此公園的森林大都是以lodgepole pine主導。

Lodgepole pine也是屬於燒了才會旺的樹,跟加州Yosemite與附近國家公園裡的sequoia一樣,需要有森林大火才能有效率地播種讓下一代順利發芽生長,也算是野火生態學的一個例子。雖然說即使沒有森林大火lodgepole pine還是可以播種,但效率很差。每年公園的backcountry都會有一些閃電引起的火災,原則上只要不危害到人類的生存,都會讓這些火繼續燒,以利森林以及整個生態的健康。
